Relapse is common during gambling recovery, but research examining how and why relapse occurs in real-world settings remains limited. Led by Professor Nicki Dowling, one project funded by the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety uses longitudinal surveys, weekly smartphone-based real-time assessments, and qualitative methods to examine gambling relapse over six months. Another project funded by UK Research and Innovation involves a rapid review of the gambling relapse literature, including relapse definitions, prevalence rates, warning signs, risk factors, consequences, and relapse prevention strategies.
